On Sunday, a friend shared that he is sometimes challenged planning a weekly event. He joked about the urgency and regularity of its re-occurrence. A weekly event happens every seventh day - ready or not. I suspect his Myers-Briggs preference is P because he has to force himself to plan and communicate early to others on his team. He gives himself until noon, five days before the next event.
The other key team member responsible for a significant portion of the event undoubtedly has a preference for J. Mid-day five days out is late. He eagerly waits for the information four-and-a-half days ahead of time. In fact, he gets antsy when he hasn't received an email before noon of that day.
For a P, five days ahead of the deadline is an eternity. Plenty of time to think, get ready and generally mull things over. The energy and urgency doesn't set in until right before things are due. This is not procrastination - just a different preference!
For a J, five days ahead of the deadline is late. At this point most of the planning and preparation should be done. In fact, all of the details are thought through and most of it is done days before the event. This allows for unforeseen circumstances. Every J knows that circumstances rarely are unforeseen because you plan for the fact that things come up. That's the reason for scheduled extra time before an event. This is not about being controlling - just a preference!
So, J's - don't beat up on those with a preference for P. They're working on the event. You just can't see it yet. And, P's - appreciate your co-worker with a preference for J. They're probably the ones that help you look good.
J or P - which one are you? And, how do you work?
